Summary

Kinch Na Shannack owes the Takers Guild a small fortune for his education as a thief, which includes (but is not limited to) lock-picking, knife-fighting, wall-scaling, fall-breaking, lie-weaving, trap-making, plus a few small magics。 His debt has driven him to lie in wait by the old forest road, planning to rob the next traveler that crosses his path。

But today, Kinch Na Shannack has picked the wrong mark。

Galva is a knight, a survivor of the brutal goblin wars, and handmaiden of the goddess of death。 She is searching for her queen, missing since a distant northern city fell to giants。

Unsuccessful in his robbery and lucky to escape with his life, Kinch now finds his fate entangled with Galva's。 Common enemies and uncommon dangers force thief and knight on an epic journey where goblins hunger for human flesh, krakens hunt in dark waters, and honor is a luxury few can afford。

A fantasy book for grown ups (thank goodness - I'm a bit fatigued by the PG-13 YA books I've been reading lately)。 Really interesting, entertaining, fast paced read。 The typical slightly reluctant hero set upon an adventure to defeat his foes。 What makes this book more enjoyable than most is the following:-The women are not just token strong women。 They are FIERCE and not to be trifled with, deserving of respect and wielding incredible power-There's a slight Ahab moment and a genuine empathy for A fantasy book for grown ups (thank goodness - I'm a bit fatigued by the PG-13 YA books I've been reading lately)。 Really interesting, entertaining, fast paced read。 The typical slightly reluctant hero set upon an adventure to defeat his foes。 What makes this book more enjoyable than most is the following:-The women are not just token strong women。 They are FIERCE and not to be trifled with, deserving of respect and wielding incredible power-There's a slight Ahab moment and a genuine empathy for whales and many other non human creatures-The cat, Brutus was it - adorable-Interesting, original re-imagining of the terror of goblins, the extraordinary strength of Giants and those monster creatures from the deep sea-The author has lots of funny one liners, his character never takes himself too seriously and I like the fact that the women don't eitherThere's a lot of fluidity of sexual preferences, profanity and references to bodily functions。 I think he could have made less references to people soiling their pants due to fear but other than that a good read。 。。。more

The Blacktongue Thief was an absolute blast of a book。 It’s both funny and serious at the proper times, and I absolutely loved the situations that Kinch and his band get into。 The characters were great, but Norrigal was definitely my favorite of the bunch。 The relationship between Kinch and his S/O is also very well done and didn’t feel forced。 Overall I think fans of Kings of the Wyld will absolutely love this book as the adventure aspects are similarly done。 My one slight criticism is that the The Blacktongue Thief was an absolute blast of a book。 It’s both funny and serious at the proper times, and I absolutely loved the situations that Kinch and his band get into。 The characters were great, but Norrigal was definitely my favorite of the bunch。 The relationship between Kinch and his S/O is also very well done and didn’t feel forced。 Overall I think fans of Kings of the Wyld will absolutely love this book as the adventure aspects are similarly done。 My one slight criticism is that the world building is a bit confusing at first, but it starts to make more sense after 50 or so pages。 Overall this was a brilliantly fun read, and I’ll be waiting for book two。 。。。more

A tad different from some of Buehlman's efforts, but as consistently good as I have found him in the past, and I think possibly one of his best。 He naughtily channels a bit of Tolkien as his band of adventurers set out on their quest。 There is magic, and fighting, and fun。 I was darned glad when I realized that there is likely to be a sequel, and I hope it comes right quick。 I liked the characters。 A tad different from some of Buehlman's efforts, but as consistently good as I have found him in the past, and I think possibly one of his best。 He naughtily channels a bit of Tolkien as his band of adventurers set out on their quest。 There is magic, and fighting, and fun。 I was darned glad when I realized that there is likely to be a sequel, and I hope it comes right quick。 I liked the characters。 。。。more

I was expecting to like this more than I did。 The world building and setting was well done, but I felt the plot got lost some of the time。 The main character had a strong and unique personality but unfortunately the humour was not much to my taste。 The book had some great details- I loved Deadlegs! But not enough to raise my overall enjoyment。 Many thanks to Netgalley for an arc of this book。

The first and only published part of a fantasy trilogy。 Well written, fast-paced and often funny。 An enjoyable read, and I look forward to the next part。 On the downside is a somewhat unoriginal world (which most fantasy suffers from) and the way in which the rules of the world are often introduced at the same time as they are needed for the plot。

Absolutely brilliant!

I loved so many things about this:1) there is a cat and he survives the book2) the witty humor was such a delight3) the world and cultures and history and details were wonderful。This was a book I got lost in and would have gladly stayed but it ended。 I can’t wait for the next one。

Been seeing a lot of hype for this book, and it didn’t disappoint。 Lots of fun, great humor, loved the prose。

I’m a horror reader。 That’s my jam。 Picked this up after really enjoying Between Two Fires。And was blown away。Yes, it lands on a load of fantasy tropes。 But, hot damn, it’s a whole lot of fun。Lead character is fantastic, though a little more development of the other characters would have been nice, but whatever。Very much looking forward to the next instalment!

3。5 ⭑I'm still not sure how to think about this book。 On the one hand, I nearly didn't finish it because I was so bored, even up until about the 70% mark。 And on the other hand, the worldbuilding was superb (hints of the author's horror background making the occasional appearance), and the ending was great。 If I'm being honest, if I had not been buddy reading this book, I would not have finished it。This is a character-driven book, until about 70% of the way through, and, as such, you will only e 3。5 ⭑I'm still not sure how to think about this book。 On the one hand, I nearly didn't finish it because I was so bored, even up until about the 70% mark。 And on the other hand, the worldbuilding was superb (hints of the author's horror background making the occasional appearance), and the ending was great。 If I'm being honest, if I had not been buddy reading this book, I would not have finished it。This is a character-driven book, until about 70% of the way through, and, as such, you will only enjoy that first 70% if you really enjoy the perspective of the protagonist。 There were bits that I liked, but mostly I found the overuse of poop and sex jokes。。。well, overused。 I care about Kinch now, but, for the majority of the book, I just didn't care at all。 That said, I can see this humor and creative vulgarity landing well with a lot of readers, so I understand the appeal。In the end, again, the worldbuilding was the real winner here。 The songs, histories, languages (don't think I didn't notice the similarity between Ispanthian and real-world Spanish), and creative application of lovecrafting magic (the book, the house, the nightmares, etc)。 It was almost like an adult fairytale with different races, witches, kings and queens, and more。I think a lot of people will like this, but that will absolutely depend on your love of the protagonist。 。。。more

Fun & pulpy。 Great for thieves guild implementation, world building, and strong emotional payoff。 Initially dismayed by first person narration but it made for a strong sense of character and cool unreliable narrator moments。

I was not expecting to love this book as much as I did。 It was pure fun that never lagged, and the more serious and tragic elements of the story never seemed at odds with the overall light tone of the narrating character。 The magic felt truly magical, with just enough reveled to set confines and expectations but not so much as to ruin the mystery and, well, magic of the magic。 There were twists I had no idea were coming, but once revealed made me want to flip back and search for clues。 The narra I was not expecting to love this book as much as I did。 It was pure fun that never lagged, and the more serious and tragic elements of the story never seemed at odds with the overall light tone of the narrating character。 The magic felt truly magical, with just enough reveled to set confines and expectations but not so much as to ruin the mystery and, well, magic of the magic。 There were twists I had no idea were coming, but once revealed made me want to flip back and search for clues。 The narrator is likable, as are all of the main cast and supporting characters - even the baddies。 Loved the unexpected range of women, who so often in action-adventure old-timey fantasies are either damsels in distress or clever girls doing clever things and accomplishing minor tasks at the margins of the story。 So 👏🏾 much 👏🏾 fun 👏🏾 this book was! 。。。more

Throughly enjoyable Hilarious, touching, exciting, and well paced。 All in all just a fantastic novel。 I highlighted some of the banter to try and use in real life。 The characters are fully realized people who I’d love to know。 Highly recommend。

My local bookstore owner recommended this book to me after I told him that I like fast-paced books that I can disappear into for a day or two。 This book didn't disappoint。 The language style was light and funny。 The magic was interesting。 All of the most powerful characters are women。 Would recommend。 My local bookstore owner recommended this book to me after I told him that I like fast-paced books that I can disappear into for a day or two。 This book didn't disappoint。 The language style was light and funny。 The magic was interesting。 All of the most powerful characters are women。 Would recommend。 。。。more

2。0 Stars!I really struggled with the plot of The Blacktongue Thief。 I felt as though the trio of characters were traveling on a journey for an unknown reason that was not revealed to me。 I listened to the audiobook and struggled at times to follow the story which could be influencing my understanding and rating。 I may need to read The Blacktongue Thief hardcopy at a later time to re-rate and truly determine if I should move forward with this series, but I really need to move on from this book f 2。0 Stars!I really struggled with the plot of The Blacktongue Thief。 I felt as though the trio of characters were traveling on a journey for an unknown reason that was not revealed to me。 I listened to the audiobook and struggled at times to follow the story which could be influencing my understanding and rating。 I may need to read The Blacktongue Thief hardcopy at a later time to re-rate and truly determine if I should move forward with this series, but I really need to move on from this book for now。 。。。more

Highly recommend the audiobook for this one, the author reads it and no only does he do an amazing job, he sings all the songs in all the different voices and that alone is incredible

I started out thinking this was gonna be another eye rolling super cool badass thief guy fantasy book, and to be fair it did start that way, but it transformed into an epic, thrilling story with surprisingly beautiful and lyrical writing。

Had alot of fun reading this one。 It's not easy to build a world within one book and put forth a quality story like this which is a credit to the author。 It really had me craving a sequel or at least a few more books in this world。 Reading through, I worried that the pacing could be a bit rushed at the end but again, the author did a good job ending it in a reasonable manner。 Only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was that the banter and narration bordered on over the top。 Sometimes it was witty a Had alot of fun reading this one。 It's not easy to build a world within one book and put forth a quality story like this which is a credit to the author。 It really had me craving a sequel or at least a few more books in this world。 Reading through, I worried that the pacing could be a bit rushed at the end but again, the author did a good job ending it in a reasonable manner。 Only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was that the banter and narration bordered on over the top。 Sometimes it was witty and made light of some dark moments and at others, just seemed unnecessary。 Overall though, it definitely added to the MC's likeability and character。 。。。more

Dnf at halfway point。 A huge part of this book hinges on the protagonist's voice and I appreciate this must be great for those who enjoy this particular brand of cynical grimdark humour, but it just wasn't for me。 Dnf at halfway point。 A huge part of this book hinges on the protagonist's voice and I appreciate this must be great for those who enjoy this particular brand of cynical grimdark humour, but it just wasn't for me。 。。。more

This book is so much fun to read, but the audio is even better。 Kark is now a part of my vocabulary。 I’ll forgive the few lazy writing tendencies I noticed- info dumping and summarizing the fight scenes- on account this is told from the main character Kinch Na Shannak’s perspective, and he’s lazy。 It took me half the book to realize he was info dumping on me because it was still just as entertaining as the story line itself。
